Mark Ring, M.A.
Registered Clinical Counsellor
I have a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia. I am a “Registered Clinical Counsellor" with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors, which means that I am required to meet certain professional standards including continuing education. I have been a counsellor since 2002, initially working as an addictions counsellor in Vancouver, Whistler and Nanaimo.
One of the truths of addiction is that it is not just about substance use. My clients and I worked through most of life’s issues. As well as working with adults I also worked with youth clients which is where I developed an expertise in parenting.
Before becoming a counsellor I worked as a research scientist at UBC, a fact that has influenced my therapeutic approach. I now use an approach that has a strong foundation in proven research and is consistent with our understanding of how the brain works.
This method of working understands the importance of emotions and works largely with the interactions of our thoughts with those emotions. Mindfulness plays a central role in this. My goals in therapy are both the alleviation of immediate suffering and building resilience for the future.
